Fantastic for all ages.We were 4 adults and 4 kids.Kids ranging from 18 months to 9 years oldOlder kids and adults went jumping off the bridge and floating down the river at high speed - lots of fun!! The beach itself is beautiful and worth the long walk. Not a great place if you have difficulty walking uphill. (Long uphill climb when leaving)Go early if you are going...beach gets pretty packed during low tide as you are able to walk a very long way from sand bar to sand bar into the ocean.
The perfect summer beach location. Fun for entire family. The beach goes on for miles or seems to. The sand is exactly how you want it. It was super busy but that added to the experience. Lots of watching the crowd. Lifeguards on duty in 4 locations including the spot where the brave jump from the bridge and sides into deep water. It was very hot the day we were there so it was fun and worth the visit. Washrooms and restaurant facilities at top of hill so bring a cooler with your stuff to avoid having to make the trip up-the-hill.
We just got back from vacation. We are from Ontario and we were in Prince Edward Island for 9 days on the east coast of the island and did a lot of tutoring and visited a lot of beaches. My son and I could not get enough of basin head. It's like nothing I've ever experienced coming from Ontario born and raised with no ocean. They have a man-made Channel that feeds the basin and the riptide flows through this channel with a super fast current and you jump in off the ledge of the pier and they Riptide sucks you out to the ocean when you getting to low tide and apparently at high tide the riptide is going in the opposite direction and it will suck you into the Basin if you jump in from the Oceanside. The water is crystal clear and the water is also very shallow so there's no need to worry about little kids plus there are lifeguards everywhere. I jumped in with my two year old and 6 year old who were both wearing life jackets but you can just kind of enjoy yourself and it is like a natural lazy river. The beaches were completely clean and there are areas that you can just relax on the shore or you can get bombarded with rip curl's for about the first 30 or 40 feet then once you go past that it's nice and calm and you can kind of bounce with the waves like you were in a wave pool. There are sandbars all the way out and you can see people over a hundred feet out and water that's up to their waist or knees depending on the tide level. If you're ever visiting Prince Edward Island you need to go to Basin head and the locals will tell you how amazing it is as well. If you want a history lesson with your awesome beach day there's lots of information and visitor stuff to educate yourself on the history of the Basin as it used to and still always changes and the openings to the ocean from the basin have come and gone and moved around in the past 200 or so years. There's also ice cream and gift shops in a restaurant and tons of parking. Enjoy
The red sand makes a squishy sound when you walked on it and was gentle on your feet. The water was warm to swim in August. You can jump off the dock into the deep end and the current would push you back to the beach so that you can do it all over. That was a wonderful day!
This is a very popular summer beach in Eastern Kings County, PE. There's plenty of room traveling by foot on the beautiful beach head west and east, to find your own space. A small bridge spans "the run" where brave swimmers jump off and currents carry you out toward the sand bars of the beach area. Great fun all day. Cafe on site. Very busy in the high season, but loads of fun.
